D.N.A. Art Collective

Open studio at Ásmundarsalur Gallery 2024

D.N.A. is an art collective founded by Deepa R. Iyengar, Nermine El Ansari, and Amanda Riffo in 2021 in Reykjavik. With their experience of otherness, they came together seeking new ways of affiliation with a country. In recent years, exploring the increasing variety of cultural DNA in Iceland, they aim to collect all forms of preconceived ideas and images within the society and deconstruct them through different exercises and games displayed to the audience.

Their first event, Unpredictable Archive of Invisible Things, was a four-week open studio in Ásmundarsalur. Within the space, they worked daily with visitors to make collages using documents they collected about their cultures and lives. People were also free to use their own documents. The workshop aimed to gather information about how people approach the question of identity at a personal and societal level. In the immediate term, the collective used collages created in the workshop to produce ten sets of books each with one book by D.N.A. and the other by participants.
