BLACK CITY

Triptych painting, mixed media on wood 500x120cm, 2010

Nermine El Ansari's work «Black City» focuses on the place of the individual in a modern megacity that is being reshaped constantly within its defined borders. The mobility of an individual is also a concerning factor. How can one cope with places and practice life when mobility becomes inherent to abstract spaces? Surprisingly, in this deterritorialization of borders and unbinding of spaces, the individual is oppressed by the flow of energy, and one’s desires are repressed and confined in established structures. «Black City» conveys an image of both anger and fragility, where the solid and ephemeral characters are intermingled. Invading constructions, barriers separating individuals, impeding them to meet and barely connecting with each other. Determined places and defined spaces where women and men are hurled by force and by the frames imposed.
